Whether you’re a casual or serious runner, running a race is a great way to get outside, spend time with other runners, and fit more physical activity into your day. The Long Island area is home to many awesome races, from 5Ks to half marathons. Here are a few upcoming races our real estate agents advise you to consider.
- Great Cow Harbor 10K: 158 Laurel Ave., Northport, NY 11768
The Great Cow Harbor 10K is a world-famous race mentioned in Runner’s World and New England Runner. The race begins at William J. Brosnan School and weaves through the village of Northport. It’s scheduled for September 23, 2023, and the gun goes off at 8:30 a.m.Registration is limited to 5,000 participants, so sign up soon if you plan on running. Packet pickup is Friday from 5:30 – 9 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 – 8 a.m. Don’t forget to look at a few Northport homes for sale while you run by!
- Fallback Half Marathon & 5K: 1 Heckscher State Parkway, East Islip, NY 11730
Celebrate turning the clocks back by running the Fallback Half Marathon or 5K on November 5, 2023. This race starts near Field 4 in Heckscher State Park. The scenery promises to be beautiful with the changing leaves and fall decor.Register for either race on the event website. The race starts at 8 a.m., rain or shine. The cutoff time for the half marathon is 2 hours and 45 minutes, and there will be a bag check for runners.
- Kids Run Series of Long Island: 10 Broadway Ave., Sayville, NY 11782
Do you have a child who loves to run? Sign them up for one, two, or all three Kids Run Series races this fall. These races are intended specifically for kids between 3 and 10. They take place on October 1, 15, and 22. There will be individual races for kids in each age bracket.The fee to sign up for all three races is $68 per child. Or, you can register for an individual race for $28. Distances increase with age. For example, 3-year-olds only run 0.06 miles, while 10-year-olds race a mile.
- Planting Fields Fall 5K: 1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay, NY 11771
If you’re looking at Oyster Bay homes for sale, consider running the Planting Fields 5K while you’re in the area. Scheduled for October 8 at 8:30 a.m., this race winds through Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park. Proceeds go to benefit the Planting Fields Foundation.The Planting Fields race course will take you past gorgeous fall trees, along with local landmarks like the Carshalton Gates. All finishers receive a medal and a photo.
- Blue Point Turkey Trot: 302 Middle Road, Blue Point, NY 11715
Wake up on Thanksgiving morning and drive to Blue Point for the Blue Point Turkey Trot. Scheduled for November 23 this year, the 5K race starts at 9 a.m. There’s also a kids’ run at 8:30 a.m.This is a less formal, “fun run” event. There are no age group prizes, but the top finishers will win a pumpkin pie! Register in advance on the event website. Proceeds benefit the Robert Burns Memorial Scholarship and various kids’ events around Long Island.
