There are over 50 wineries on Long Island, and there isn’t a bad one in the bunch. You never need an excuse to visit a local winery, but National Merlot Day on November 7th gives you the perfect opportunity to enjoy a day of wine tasting and other treats. Our REALTORS® are familiar with some of the most popular wineries in the area, and we’d like to share some of our favorites with you today.
- Wölffer Estate Vineyard — 139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack, NY 11962
The Wölffer Estate Vineyard may seem like the epitome of “fancy” given the number of high-end vehicles that bring in well-groomed guests daily, but it’s quite accessible. This is largely due to the wide array of high-quality wines to fit every budget. Choosing a favorite is hard, but one you should try is the Grandioso Rosé, a Merlot with notes of peach and spice. You can also enjoy small plate snacks in the tasting room that are always fresh and delightful. - Paumanok Vineyards — 1074 Main Road, Aquebogue, NY 11931
As soon as you pull up to Paumanok Vineyards, you’ll instantly know you’re in for a special treat. The winery and tasting room are inside a renovated, turn-of-the-century barn. In recent years, the experience has gotten even better because the family that owns it purchased nearby Palmer Vineyards, where you’ll find live music performances and other events. In addition to red wines and other favorites, each location hosts dinners ranging from wood-fired pizzas to raw oysters. - Macari Vineyards — 150 Bergen Ave., Mattituck, NY 11952
Macari Vineyards is another family-owned location where quality is always a priority. The land has been in the family since the 1960s when the patriarch built a potato farm. It was transformed by father and son in 1995 into the winery it would become today. In addition to a wide range of wines, the vineyard hosts many events where you’ll find wonderfully prepared dishes from well-known chefs. No matter what wine you prefer, you should check out the 2021 Meadowlark Pinot Meunier Rosé. With its mix of pomegranate, tangerine, and botanicals, this wine will make an impact. - Channing Daughters Winery — 1927 Scuttle Hole Road, Bridgehampton, NY 11932
Less than 10 minutes from the Wölffer Estate Vineyard, Channing Daughters Winery offers a much different wine-tasting experience. Many people speak highly of the small, charming tasting room, vine-side picnic tables, and tents, but it’s the wine people return for. A recent favorite is the 2022 Rosato, which uses the best of the winery’s rosé in a single bottle. Another great blend is the 2002 Rosso Fresco, which combines red fruit, olives, roast meaty spice, and dried herbs. - Lieb Cellars — 13050 Oregon Road, Cutchogue, NY 11935
If you’ve ever visited a trendy urban wine bar in New York City, there’s a good chance that you’ve seen wines from Lieb Cellars being sold. This winery has an old-fashioned appearance, creating a cozy, classy space for wine enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. During the winter season, you can check out wine tastings mixed with cheese, charcuterie boards, and live music. There are many great wines to be found here, such as the 2020 Lieb Teroldego-Lagrein with its tasty grape jelly and white pepper notes.
