Advantages of Storage - Sell a Home | Laffey Real Estate

There’s a lot to deal with when putting your home on the market among Oyster Bay homes for sale. While our real estate agents are helping you find the perfect buyer, one of the best things you can do to remove some of the hassle is to put some of your things into storage. What kind of storage should you use, and what should you put there? Here’s what you need to know.

  • Reasons for Storage. When you sell your home, first you need to declutter to get it ready to show. To allow potential buyers to envision themselves living there, making your home as neutral as possible is important, which means getting your artwork and knickknacks out of the way. Taking the things you won’t need between now and your move and putting them in storage will make the process easier.
  • Types of Storage. There are three different types of storage you can choose from. A local storage unit is best if you’re moving to approximately the same area where you live now. Somewhere convenient and inexpensive you can drive to, where you can put your extra stuff until you’re ready for it again. Consider a portable storage unit if you’re moving to a new town. The unit is delivered to your house, where you pack it up at your leisure. When you’re done, the storage company can send it to your new home—or keep it in a storage facility until you’re ready for it. Finally, if you’d rather spend a little more and eliminate the hassle, try a full-service storage unit. Their employees will pack your things for you and take them away until you need them, then deliver them to your new home whenever you’re ready.
  • What to Store. Anything you won’t need between now and when you move can safely be put into storage. That includes artwork, knickknacks, off-season clothing, small appliances, and anything else considered clutter. Try to throw some of it away, of course, but if there’s anything you know, you’ll need again, just not for a while, put it in storage. If you have backyard furniture or sporting, fishing, or camping equipment, that can also be stored. You can even store extra vehicles. Not what you’re using to get around, of course, but if you have a boat, a motorcycle, or an antique car sitting unused in the driveway or garage, placing it in storage will get it out of sight.
  • Benefits of Storage. We’ve been through the practical reasons for storage. But it can also make the moving process a lot easier. For one thing, it gives you a head start on packing. Rather than putting your extra stuff into the garage or shoving it into a little-used room, you can gather it all up and put it into storage now to be ready when needed. It also makes the whole moving process much simpler. When the time comes for you actually to move, you’ll have your hands full with a thousand other things. The more you can get packed up and out of the way now, the better.
