A new Aldi supermarket is slated to open this week in Central Islip.

The newly built, freestanding store at 215 Carleton Ave., which measures about 20,000 square feet, will hold its grand opening on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The newest Aldi store is the chain’s 14th on Long Island.

The Central Islip store was built by PX4 Development. The Manhasset-based developer, which acquired the 13-acre site formerly owned by New York Institute of Technology last year, also plans to repurpose existing buildings on the property for 130 units of multifamily housing and medical offices. The housing is planned to have 24 units for people with autism and disabled veterans and 106 units for seniors.

Aldi’s plans to open two more Long Island supermarkets next year. The discount grocery chain is expected to open a store in the first quarter at 2799 Route 112 in Medford in the space formerly occupied by Michael’s. The crafts chain is relocating to the space vacated by Rite Aid in the same center.

Aldi also plans to open a 21,000-square-foot supermarket at 153 Ronkonkoma Ave. in Lake Ronkonkoma in part of the 33,000-square-foot space that had been occupied by King Kullen. The redevelopment recently got approved from the Town of Brookhaven and the new Aldi store will likely open in the third quarter of next year.

Aldi opened its first store on Long Island in Sept. 2011, taking a 19,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Office Depot on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore. Since then, Aldi supermarkets have opened in Bohemia, Carle Place, East Northport, Hempstead, Lake Grove, North Babylon, Patchogue, Riverhead, Rocky Point, Selden, Shirley and Valley Stream.

Founded in Germany in 1946, Aldi is the largest privately owned supermarket chain in the world. Later split into two companies, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, the two conglomerates and its subsidiaries have more than 13,400 stores worldwide. In the U.S., there are more than 2,300 Aldi stores, and earlier this year the company acquired the Winn Dixie and Harveys chains, adding nearly 400 more stores. Aldi Nord also owns the Trader Joe’s chain, which operates separately and has more than 580 stores in the U.S., including seven on Long Island.
